The Importance of Safety Compliance Training

According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), 4,609 workers were killed on the job in 2011 � almost 90 a week or nearly 13 deaths every day.

As the business owner or manager you know that your employees are your most valuable asset. Without their work and dedication your business could come to a halt.  Preventing accidents, injuries and ill health caused by work should be a priority for everyone.  Making sure that you offer proper safety products and supplies is not always enough.

Providing Safety Training helps you to:

  • ensure your employees are not injured or made ill by the work they do;
  • develop a positive health and safety culture, where safe and healthy working becomes second nature to everyone;
  • find out how you could manage health and safety better;
  • meet your legal obligation to protect the health and safety of your employees.

Who needs health and safety training?

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has written numerous occupational safety and health standards and regulations that affect employers and employees in the United States. It is the employer's legal responsibility to educate employees on all workplace safety standards and the hazards that their employees may face while on the job.

Your employees need training.  Your employees needs to know how to work safely and without risks to health. They need to know about your health and safety policy, your arrangements for implementing it, and the part they play. They also need to know how they can raise any health and safety concerns with you.

Are employees the only ones who need training?

You need training:  Whether you are an employer or self-employed, you must be up to date with how to identify the hazards and control the risks associated with your business.

Your managers and supervisors also require trainingThey need to know what you expect from them in terms of health and safety, and how you expect them to deliver. They need to understand your health and safety policy, where they fit in, and how you want health and safety managed. They may also need training in the specific hazards of your processes and how you expect the risks to be controlled.
