Eye injuries in the workplace are very common, with about 2,000 eye injuries occurring each day, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). However, many experts believe that the right eye protection can lessen the severity or even prevent 90 percent of eye injuries.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires workers to use eye and face protection whenever there is a reasonable probability of injury that could be prevented by such equipment.
Eyewear such as goggles, face shields, safety glasses or full face respirators must be used when an eye hazard exists. Eyewear, including safety glasses, should fit each individual properly and provide appropriate protection for the hazards present.
While proper safety eyewear can help prevent injuries, problems can still arise from environmental or work site conditions.
One of the biggest challenges, regardless of industry, application or environment that users of safety eyewear face on the job, is foggy lenses. Foggy lenses expose workers to serious injury and significantly decrease productivity.
Lenses fog for a number of reasons, all of which are related to temperature and humidity. When sudden changes in temperature occur, small pockets of moisture condense on the lens, causing a hazy-white fog to form, often immediately.
The most common causes of fogging include:
Transitioning between warm and cool environments
Physical activity and exertion
Handling materials with fluctuating temperatures
Environmental and weather conditions
