Selecting the Right Fall Protection Equipment

Falls are a leading cause of death and injury in the workplace, but they can be prevented when workers understand proper set up and safe use of equipment. Fall protection equipment is a vital part of any safety program, but not all equipment is created equal.

Here a few things to look for when selecting the correct fall protection equipment:

  • Look for equipment that provides the support and protection required for your specific job or industry. Different jobs and industries require specific fall protection, so make sure you match your equipment the hazards that are present. Oftentimes injuries occur not only from the lack or improper use of equipment, but also from the incorrect fall protection equipment being used.

  • Make sure the equipment is tested to the highest standards and won't lock up or freeze due to weather.

  • Check that the equipment provides energy-absorbing technology to protect your employees in the case of a fall. Spring radial and Constant Force are examples of this new technology in the market today.

  • Research and see if the manufacturer who makes the equipment is at the leading edge of product design. Manufacturers who are using modern engineering and innovative designs are well positioned to protect your employees in the future and adapt to new safety problems and challenges.

Two products that meet these requirements and provide a dependable means of fall protection are the Latchways Mini Twin Leg Retractable Lanyard and the Latchways Leading Edge SRL from MSA.

This new design eliminates the need for an external energy-absorber outside of the housing making it the smallest retractable lanyard on the market.
